Tree & Shrub Care FAQs
Late winter (February to March) is ideal for most deciduous trees in Salt Lake City because they are dormant and disease transmission risk is lowest. Spring-flowering trees should be pruned right after they bloom. Avoid pruning in fall, as it can stimulate new growth vulnerable to frost.
Common signs include discolored or wilting leaves, unusual bark peeling, fungal growths, dead branches, and excessive leaf drop. In the Salt Lake Valley, the most common problems are iron chlorosis in maples and oaks (yellow leaves with green veins, caused by our high-pH soil), fire blight on ornamental pears and apples, and borers in stressed aspens. We offer free assessments if you suspect a problem.
We handle small to medium tree removals. For very large trees near structures or power lines, we partner with certified arborist firms that specialize in high-risk removals and can coordinate the full project for you.
Bur Oak, Honeylocust, Hackberry, and Kentucky Coffeetree all handle our alkaline soil well. For smaller trees, we recommend Serviceberry, Crabapple, and Japanese Tree Lilac. We steer clients away from chlorosis-prone species like silver maple and pin oak, and on the east bench we lean toward deer-resistant choices. We always match tree selection to your specific site conditions: soil type, sun exposure, and available space.
